Utopia/Mbembe/Herb: Although Mbembe also recognizes Africa's "possibilities" in the "misfortune" of the present (Mbembe 2016(1), 304), he does not see the "possibilities" of Africa in the present. But seen as a whole, the "African search for self-determination" must fail. Despite all ambivalence, resignation dominates the conclusion of the study. "Africa should therefore really only be spoken of as a chimera, which we work through in complete blindness; as a nightmare [...]".
Herb: The political disenchantment leads to a sceptical perception of Mbembe's own project. Mbembe concludes with the words that "Africa as such does not exist" (304) and discursively cannot be developed in the end. In the end, the familiar proves to be the unknown. >Subjectivity/Mbembe, >Nihilism/Mbembe.
