Crises/Streeck: thesis: Through "investment strikes", the economy is in a position to deprive the state of the financial resources it needs for a redistributive (social) policy in the medium-term. While after the Second World War there was still a "post war settlement" between the economy and politics to the effect that the economy could "live" with moderate profit, the situation changed fundamentally in the late 1960s at the latest and the "post war settlement" was unilaterally terminated. The crises that most Western democracies have experienced since the 1970s to the present day are - according to Streeck - a manifestation of the fundamental incompatibility between democracy and capitalism.
