Roman Jakobson (1896-1982), Russian-born American linguist and literary theorist. His major works include On the Problem of Sound in Russian (1921), Новейшие течения в лингвистике (New Trends in the Study of Language, 1929), and Основы языка (Fundamentals of Language, 1956, with Morris Halle). His fields of specialization were linguistics, semiotics, and literary criticism.
