René Spitz (1887-1974), Austrian-American psychoanalyst. His major works include Hospitalism: An Inquiry into the Genesis of Psychiatric Conditions in Early Childhood (1945), The First Year of Life: A Psychoanalytic Study of Normal and Deviant Development of Object Relations (1965), and No and Yes: On the Genesis of Human Communication (1957). His fields of specialization were child development, psychoanalysis, communication development, object relations and the effects of maternal deprivation.
