Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), English philosopher, jurist, and social reformer. Founder of modern utilitarianism. His major works include An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation (1789), A Defence of Usury (1787), and The Panopticon (1791). He mainly worked on ethics, law, economics, and social reform.
