Gregory Bateson (1904-1980), English anthropologist, social scientist, linguist, visual anthropologist, semiotician, and cyberneticist. His major works include Steps to an Ecology of Mind (1972), Mind and Nature (1979), and Naven: A Survey of the Problems Suggested by a Ceremony of the Iatmul People of New Guinea (1936). His fields of specialization were anthropology, cybernetics, psychiatry, and semiotics.
