Reformation: The Reformation was a religious, political, intellectual, and cultural upheaval that splintered Catholic Europe, setting in place the structures and beliefs that would define the continent in the modern era. It began in Germany in 1517 when Martin Luther, a monk and theology professor, published a document called the Ninety-Five Theses, criticizing the Catholic Church's sale of indulgences.
