Plato on Literature - Dictionary of Arguments

Gadamer I 374
Literature/Scripture/Writing/Plato/Gadamer: [Plato's] critique of scripture should also be appreciated from the point of view that it shows that the poetic and philosophical tradition in Athens has become literature. We see in Plato's dialogues how the "interpretation" of texts, as practiced in sophistic speech, especially that of poetry for didactic purposes, challenged Plato's rejection.
We also see how Plato seeks to overcome the weakness of the Logoi, and especially the written Logoi, through his own dialogue poetry. The literary form of dialogue places language and concept back into the original movement of conversation. The word is thus protected against all dogmatic abuse.
