Democracy/Capitalism/Habermas: there is an indissoluble tension between capitalism and democracy; two opposing principles of social integration compete with each other for priority. If one trusts the self-image expressed in democratic constitutional principles, modern societies assert the primacy of the world over the subsystems separated from their institutional orders. The normative sense of democracy can be summed up in social theory in the formula that the fulfilment of the functional necessities of systemically integrated areas of action should find their limit in the integrity of the lifeworld (...).
On the other hand, the capitalist momentum of the economic system can only be maintained to the extent that the accumulation process is uncoupled from practical value orientations. The driving mechanism of the economic system must be kept as free as possible from life-world restrictions (...). See Capitalism/Habermas.
