Wilhelm Dilthey on Doubts - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 243 Doubt/Certainty/Dilthey/Gadamer: In fact, certainty exists in very different modes. The kind of certainty that has passed through doubt and can give us certainty through that process, is different from the immediate certainty of life. Dilthey: It is now characteristic of the problematic nature of Dilthey's foundation of the humanities that he does not distinguish between this methodological doubt and the doubts that come "by themselves". The certainty of the sciences means to him the completion of the certainty of life. Cartesianism/Dilthey/Gadamer: The Cartesian form of reaching certainty through doubt is immediately obvious to Dilthey, provided he is a child of the Enlightenment. The shaking off of authorities of which he speaks does not only correspond to the epistemological need for justification of the natural sciences, but also concerns the knowledge of values and purposes. For him, too, they are not an undoubted whole of tradition, custom, religion or law, but "even here the spirit must produce from itself a valid knowledge"(1). 1. Dilthey, Ges.
