Substitution: in a formula, a symbol can be substituted for another symbol under certain conditions. E.g. If a constant is substituted for a variable, a propositional function becomes a statement. See also Substitutability, Generality, Validity, Statements, Propositional functions, Fine-grained/coarse-grained._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them. Instead, they are intended to give a short introduction to the contributions below. – Lexicon of Arguments. | |||

John Lyons on Substitution - Dictionary of Arguments
I 164 Lexical substitution rules/lexicon/substitutions/Lyons: formal: X > x I x e X "If X is a variable that includes all those grammatical classes represented in the generative system (e.g. T, N or V), replace X with x, which is an element of class C". I 165 Lexical substitution: since the rule is independent of the value of X, we can consider the word lists as a set of rules that are an appendix to the grammar and then we do not need the generalized lexical substitution rule at all. Vs: we are about to revise that! Pro: with this thesis we follow the early Chomsky then we have the following lists: T > {the} N> {man, dog, chimpanzee,...} V > {bites, eats, opens…} I 166 Grammar/Lexicon: the combination of grammar and lexicon is then like this: (1) S > T + N + V + T + N (2) N > ({Na, Nb, Nc} (3) V > {Vd, Ve, Vf} (4) Na > {man, dog,...} (5) Nb > {banana, milk…} …. This system of rules formalizes within the grammar the fact that Na, Nb, Nc and Vd, Ve, Vf are the subclasses of classes N and V. An additional layer is therefore introduced. This layer is indicated by the links in the family tree. I 167 Problem: this, however, allows exactly those combinations that should have been excluded. >Selektion/Lyons._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
