| Semantics: Semantics is the field of linguistics, which deals with the meaning of expressions, words, parts of words, sentences or signs. Aids for ascertaining the meaning are investigations of the use and the determination of the truth value (true or false) of the statements, which can be determined from the linguistic or action-like utterances. Therefore, semantic questions are ultimately truth questions. I 138 Grammar/Semantics/Lyons: semantic considerations should not be allowed in grammar, but not because one is not interested in it, but because the grammatical and semantic structure of a language is largely, if not completely, congruent! As soon as one assumes that every identity or difference in the grammatical structure must be assigned to a corresponding identity or difference in meaning, grammar and semantics are distorted. Separation: grammar and semantics should only be used in the description. It is not about the fact that the grammarian should not benefit from understanding the language! Ambiguity: is often a sign that different grammatical analyses can be assigned. But ambiguity alone is no justification for this allocation.
