Hans-Georg Gadamer on Logos - Dictionary of Arguments

I 373
Logos/Gadamer: Those who possess the "art" of questioning are those who know how to defend themselves against the suppression of questioning by the dominant opinion.
>Question/Gadamer
, >Doxa/Plato.
Whoever possesses this art will search for everything him- or herself that speaks for an opinion. Dialectic consists in not trying to hit the said in its weakness, but to bring it to its true strength by oneself. It is not the art of argumentation and speech that is meant here, which can make even a weak thing strong, but the art of thinking that knows how to make objections stronger. The maieutic productivity of the Socratic dialogue, its midwifery of the word, may well address the human persons who are the partners in the conversation, but it only adheres to the opinions they express and whose immanent factual consistency is developed in the conversation.
Logos: What emerges in its truth is the Logos, which is neither mine nor yours, and which therefore surpasses the subjective meaning of the interlocutors in a way
I 374
that the person leading the conversation always remains the unknowing person.
>Logos.
Dialectic: Dialectic as the art of conducting a conversation is at the same time the art of looking together in the unity of one respect (synhoran eis hen eidos), i.e. it is the art of concept formation as the elaboration of what is meant together.
>Dialectic, >Meaning (Intending), >Language use, >Understanding,
>Hermeneutics.
