Plato on Thinking - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 426 Thinking/Plato/Gadamer: Plato describes thinking as an inner conversation of the soul with itself(1), and the infinity of the dialectical effort he demands from the philosopher is the expression of the discursivity of our finite Gadamer I 427 mind. Also, Plato, as much as he called for "pure thinking", has basically always acknowledged that the medium of Onoma and Logos remains indispensable for thinking the thing. However, in so far as the elevation of names is made in view of the idea and is determined as dialectic, i.e. as the looking together into the unity of the view, as the looking out of the common from varying phenomena, it follows the natural direction in which language itself is formed. The elevation of the names merely means that the truth of the matter is not in the name itself. It does not mean that the use of names and logos is dispensable for thought. Mediation: Plato has rather always recognized that it this mediation of thought is needed, even if they must be regarded as always obsolete.
