Anne Philips on Gender Identity - Dictionary of Arguments

Gaus I 285
Gender identity/difference/diversity/Philips/Mottier: As Phillips puts it, the recent shift from an
emphasis on identity to difference has 'moved feminism beyond the question of women's exclusion/inclusion to a less gender-specific set of issues associated with homogeneity/heterogeneity, sameness/diversity, and universality/difference' (1998(1): 15).
Against this backdrop, identity differences come to be seen in positive terms, rather than as impediments towards political mobilization. Indeed, the affirmation of group difference acts as a possible platform for political action (Young, 1990(2); Mendus, 1992(3)).
