Francis Bacon on Experiments - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 354 Experiment/Bacon/Gadamer: Bacon himself calls the method he demands an experimental one(1). It should be borne in mind, however, that the experiment in Bacon does not always mean the technical event of the natural scientist who artificially induces processes under isolating conditions and makes them measurable. Rather, experiment is also and above all the artful guidance of our mind, which is prevented from leaving itself to hasty generalizations, and which consciously varies the observations it makes of nature, consciously confronting the most remote, apparently most divergent cases, and thus learning to arrive at the axioms step by step and continuously by way of an exclusionary process(2). >Induction/Bacon; (Cf. >Thought Experiments). 1.
