George Kennan on Misinformation - Dictionary of Arguments
Krastev I 173 Misinformation/Kennan/Krastev: In the famous Long Telegram he sent from Moscow in 1946, American diploma George Kennan wrote that 'the greatest danger that can befall us in coping with this problem of Soviet communism, is that we shall allow ourselves to become like those with whom we are coping.' The Soviet habit that he was most concerned for Americans to avoid imitating was the 'disrespect of Russians for objective truth - indeed, their disbelief in its existence' which 'leads them to view all stated facts as instruments for furtherance of one ulterior purpose or another'.(1) Bias/Truth/Kennan: What distinguished Western liberalism from its enemies on both the left and the right, according to Kennan, was its commitment to unbiased information, especially when that information challenges fundamental preconceptions. >Misinformation/Arendt, >Fake News/Krastev. 1.
