al-Farabi on Community - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 125
Community/al-Farabi/Höffe: The perfect community, founded in wisdom and virtue, is the mediating and unifying authority between the microcosm, the human being striving for perfection, and the macrocosm, the perfect universe, in the spirit of New Platonism(1).
Organic image of the state: Al-Fārābī adopts an organic state thinking according to which the community is to be understood as a human body. There are certainly ancient models for this, e.g. Plato, who however sees the states in analogy to the soul. Therefore we should rather think here of Livius' story of the rebellion of the stomach against the limbs, also of Cicero. For al-Fārābī
Höffe I 126
the excellent community is like a perfect body, in which life is perfectly maintained in one state through the interaction of all limbs.
