K.W.F. Solger on Symbols - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 79 Symbols/Solger/Gadamer: According to Solger(1), the symbolic denotes an "existence in which the idea is recognized in some way", i.e. the intimate unity of ideal and appearance, which is specific to the work of art. The allegorical, on the other hand, allows such meaningful unity to come about only by pointing to another. >Allegory. Gadamer I 83 Schelling (...) prepare[d] (...) the central position of the concept of the symbol within the philosophy of art. (>Symbols/Schelling). Similarly, we encounter the sentence in Solger's work that all art is symbolic(2). What Solger means by this is that the work of art is the existence of "idea" itself - and not that an "idea sought next to the actual work of art" is its meaning. Precisely this is characteristic of the work of art, the creation of the genius, that its meaning lies in the appearance itself and is not arbitrarily placed in it. 1. Solger, K.W.F.
