Friedrich Schiller on Symbols - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 82 Symbols/Schiller/Gadamer: [Goethe gives weight to the experience of the symbol], because it should help him to escape the "millionfold hydra of empiricism". Schiller encourages [Goethe] in this and finds this sentimental way of feeling entirely in harmony with "what we have established about it with each other". With Goethe, however, it is obviously not so much an aesthetic experience as an experience of reality, for which he apparently draws the term "symbolic" from old Protestant language use.
