Sentence meaning/truth condition/Searle: thesis: leaves the content of what is said radically underdetermined - e.g. "I had breakfast/had measles: does not say that I had measles today - wrong: to say, the truth conditions would be determined only with respect to a background - right: literal meaning fixes the truth conditions absolutely, but is itself vague and always incomplete - e.g. the assumption that the object can be cut, is not part of the literal meaning of "to cut" - (background).
