Language and Thought/Aristotle/Gadamer: Indeed, even Aristotle, as much as his own training of "logic" was decisively motivated by the conscious handling of the logic of definition, especially in the classificatory description of nature, to depict the order of beings and to free it from all linguistic contingencies, remained completely bound into the unity of speaking and thinking.
Language/Aristotle: The few places where he speaks of language as such at all are therefore far from isolating the linguistic sphere of meaning from the material world that is named by it. When Aristotle says of the sounds or characters that they then "signify" when they become a "symbolon", this does indeed mean that they are not natural, but emerged by agreement (kata synthékän). But this is by no means an instrumental sign theory.
Convention: Rather, the agreement according to which the sounds of speech or characters mean something is not an agreement about a means of communication - such an agreement would always require language - but it is the agreement on which the community among people, their agreement on what is good and right is based.(1) >Nomos/Aristotle.
