Citioyen/citizen/Rousseau: Only in a republican community does the individual enjoy "civil liberty" (1), because only the legal force of the common will effectively justifies the right to property and he can understand himself as citoyen and at the same time as the author of all laws, who thus, by obeying the volonté générale, ultimately obeying only himself, is thereby autonomous - an insight which in turn constitutes his "moral freedom" (2) and, according to Rousseau, in the absence of which it is appropriate that "he is forced to be free" (3). In the event of a conflict between the private interests of the bourgeois and the volonté générale embodied in the public-interest citoyen, the latter is therefore
decisive and in this the republican primacy of Rousseau's politics is paradigmatically condensed in terms of its relationship to the economy.
