Erving Goffman on Roles - Dictionary of Arguments

Habermas III 135
Role/Goffman/Habermas: Goffman thesis: In normal work situations, the individual behaves in a way that can be examined with terms that are applied to theatrical performances. The actor presents his/her activity to himself/herself and others by making a certain impression, controlling and directing others.(1)
>Manipulation.
Habermas III 136
Role/Goffman: some roles are especially tailored to a self-presentation: that of the boxer, the surgeon, the violinist or the policeman. They are given a special place in the nation's commercially organized dreams.
Habermas: here the reflective trait of self-portrayal towards others becomes an element of the professional role.
