Here we are introduced to a moment of truth in the humanities which was no longer accessible to the self-contemplation of the humanities in the 19th century. Vico lived in an unbroken tradition of rhetorical-humanistic education and only needed to reassert its unaltered law. After all, there has always been a knowledge that the possibilities of rational proof and teaching do not fully exhaust the circle of knowledge.
