Music: Music is a form of art that organizes sound in time and space. The physical parameters amplitude and frequency control the sensual qualities pitch and volume. Tone colors are formed by superpositions of partials, chords by superposition of different pitches. Durations are another parameter. Experiential dimensions correspond to the physical parameters. Hans-Georg Gadamer on Music - Dictionary of Arguments

I 97
Music/Gadamer: Even when we listen, for example, to absolute music we must "understand" it. And only if we understand it, if it is us, it is there for us as an artistic entity. So although absolute music is a pure form movement as such, a kind of sounding mathematics, and there is no representational meaningful content that we preserve in it, the understanding still retains reference to the meaningful. It is the indeterminacy of this reference that is the specific relation of meaning of such music.(1)
The mere seeing, the mere hearing are dogmatic abstractions that artificially reduce the phenomena. Perception always captures meaning.
>Perception,
>Meaning, >Understanding.

1. The more recent studies on the relationship between vocal music and absolute music, which we owe to Georgiades (Musik und Sprache, 1954), seem to confirm this connection. Cf. meanwhile also the estate work by Georgiades "Nennen und Erklingen" Göttingen 1985.
