Complex: a complex is composed of components that can be distinguished from each other and are relatively autonomous. Complex behavior refers to systems that consist of several components. The relative independence of the components is manifested in their behavior. Relative autonomy of the components is determined by the description of the complex as a whole.

John Lyons on Complexes/Complexity - Dictionary of Arguments

Complex sentences/transformational rules/phrase structure rules/grammar/Lyons: e.g. Bill was reading the newspaper, wenn John arrived

a) ∑ > NP + VP (time verb) (notation: parenthesis: optional)

b) Time adeverb {preposition + time nouns
Temporal composition + ∑.}

Suppose b) is optional: i.e. without b) the time adverb appears in the final chain and is replaced by "yesterday" in sentences.
b) selects preposition and time nouns: For example "on Tuesday", "in March" etc.
I 228
Example "last week". More rules would be needed here.
N.B.: here, however, the construction "temporal junction + ∑" is of interest: this leads to "when John came in" and classifies the expression as a time adverb as well as "yesterday" or "on Tuesday".
Def Temporal Conjunction: e.g. as, if. See also Embeding/Lyons
