Soviet Union: The Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was a single-party, communist state that spanned much of Eurasia from 1922 to 1991. It covered an area of 22.4 million square kilometers (8.7 million square miles), making it the largest country in the world by land area by a considerable margin. The USSR consisted of 15 constituent republics, which possessed substantial autonomy in all but foreign affairs, defense, and heavy industry. See also Communism, Socialism._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them.
