Hans-Georg Gadamer on Representation - Dictionary of Arguments

Representation/Picture/Image/archetypal image/Gadamer: (...) strictly speaking, it is only through the image that the

archetypal image actually becomes the archetypal image, i.e. it is only from the image that the depiction actually becomes pictorial. Cf. >Presentation/Gadamer
.
Representational image: e.g. image of a ruler: [this does not mean] that the portrayed person gains a new, more actual appearance through the image. Rather, it is the other way round. Because the ruler, the statesman, the hero has to show himself and represent his own, because he has to represent, the picture gains its own reality. Nevertheless, here lies a turning point. He, when he shows himself, must meet the expectation of the image that is placed upon him. It is only because he has such a being in showing himself that he is specifically represented in the picture. The first is thus certainly the self-representation, the second the representation in the images that this representing-oneself finds. >Picture/Gadamer.
