Hans-Georg Gadamer on Object - Dictionary of Arguments
I 305 Object/Thinking/Gadamer: A truly historical thinking must take into account its own historicity. Only then will it not chase after the phantom of a historical object that is the object of progressive research, but will learn to recognize in the object the other of its own and thus the one as well as the other. The true historical object is not an object, but the unity of this one and the other, a relationship in which the reality of history exists as much as the reality of historical understanding(1). An appropriate hermeneutics would have to show the reality of the story in the understanding itself. This is what I call the required "effect history".
