G.W.F. Hegel on Anthropology - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 329
Anthropology/Hegel/Höffe:
A. According to a tradition of anthropology dating back to Plato and Aristotle, the human is not capable of surviving or living a good life on his or her own. Both for biological reasons - because of the need of children for help and for the sake of reproduction - and in order to lead a successful life with the help of the gift of language and reason, people unite to form a community of rights and benefits.
>Community
, >Society.
B. According to an alternative anthropology, a "modern" view - although it is again represented already in antiquity, by sophists - humans are concerned with self-assertion in the face of competition from their peers. Without naming the two options and their most important representatives, Hegel's Master-Slave-Chapter(1) joins in the matter primarily to the second option. Admittedly, the master-slave-relationship also plays a role in the first option, at least in Aristotle's variant. >Master-Slave/Hegel.

1. Hegel, The Phenomenology of Spirit, 1807
