Johann Martin Chladenius on Perspective - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 186 Perspective/Chladenius/Gadamer: [some] pioneers of historical thinking, among whom there are many long lost names in the 18th century, have tried to give guidance for the understanding and interpretation of historical books. Among them, Chladenius(1) in particular has been identified as a forerunner of Romantic hermeneutics(2), and indeed we find in him the interesting notion of the "point of view" (German: "Sehepunkt") as the reason "why we recognize a thing this way and not another", a term derived from optics, which the author explicitly adopts from Leibniz. >Hermeneutics/Chladenius, >Understanding/Chladenius. 1. J.M.Chladenius, Einleitung zur richtigen Auslegung vernünftiger Reden und Schriften, 1742. 2. Durch J. Wach, dessen dreibändiges Werk „Das Verstehen« ganz in Diltheys Horizont verbleibt._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
