Translation, philosophy: philosophically interesting in the transmission of a text into another language is its indeterminateness - the fundamental impossibility of choosing between available competing versions, if the source language is too little known. See also Gavagai, idiolect, uncertainty of translation, indeterminacy, translation manual, ostension, pointing.

Daniel Dennett on Translation - Dictionary of Arguments

I 495
Media/translation/Dennett: There are huge differences between the media. the similarity is not syntactic, but semantic. Not the text, but the action. >Media
.
II 63
Translation/interpretation/Dennett: We run the risk of introducing too much clarity, too much distinction, too much articulation and thus too much organization in the systems that we try to understand. Through that we also risk incorporating too much of the particular nature of our own organization. >Interpretation.
Example:
Bill hit Sam
Sam was beaten by Sam.
Bill was the actor in the act of hitting whose victim was Sam.
Dennett: Because we are forced into any such language structure, we willy-nilly make more distinctions than the circumstances might allow. >Circumstances.
