Phonemes: are linguistically interpreted sounds, which are combined respectively for a language in a system and which have the potential to change the meaning of a larger phonetic unit in which they occur. E.g. red/dead. As pure sound events, these smallest sound units are called phones.

W.V.O. Quine on Phonemes - Dictionary of Arguments

VII (c) 50
Phoneme/Quine: presupposes a concept of meaning equality - containment within the set of meaningful strings is not possible without a concept of the phoneme - but the list of phonemes is not possible without synonymy - the same length and (almost) identical sounding sequences can be regarded as the same or as different - Density: which acoustic differences are to count as relevant? - Problem: speech acts must be grouped together as bundles of certain density - all speech acts belong to the class K of sound sequences - grammar: based on two concepts: "phoneme" and "significant".

Grammar/category/phoneme/Quine: for a phoneme sequence it is not possible to distinguish between grammatical categories.
