R. Descartes on Prejudice - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 282 Prejudice/Descartes/Gadamer: As for (...) the division of prejudices into those of authority and haste, this division is apparently based on the basic presupposition of the Enlightenment, according to which a methodically disciplined use of reason is able to prevent any error. That was Descartes' idea of the method. >Method. Haste is the real source of error, which leads to error when using one's own reason. Authority, on the other hand, is to blame for not using one's reason at all. The classification is thus based on an excluding opposition of authority and reason. The false bias for the old, for authority, is what is in itself worth fighting. >Authority. Gadamer I 283 Gadamer: But there can be no doubt that the real consequence of the Enlightenment is another: the subjugation of all authority to reason. Correspondingly, the prejudice out of haste is to be understood as Descartes' thought, namely as the source of all error in the use of reason. It is fitting that the old division after the victories of the Enlightenment, when hermeneutics was released from all dogmatic ties, returns in a changed sense. Thus we read in Schleiermacher's work that he distinguishes bias and haste as causes of misunderstanding. He puts the constant prejudices of bias next to the current misjudgments due to haste. >Enlightenment. 1.
