Slater I 11 Hospitalism/Spitz: René Spitz’s studies of children raised in institutions had called attention to potential problems resulting from early maternal deprivation. In the 1940s, Spitz had identified a syndrome that he termed “hospitalism” that suggested that institutionalized children were subject to severe depressive symptoms and possible long-term damage to their adult personality (Horst & Veer, 2008)(1).
