Hilary Putnam on Similarity - Dictionary of Arguments

V 135f
Perception/Putnam: whether two things are similar, is a question of concept formation. Perception is not distorted physical reality and not an artificial version of the physical facts. Habituation can cause doubt that the term "the same qualitative character" is well defined.

V 142ff
Natural Kind/similarity/Putnam: similarity depends on the natural kind and the context.
>Natural kind, >Complexity.

III 22
Similarity/function: knives are not similar because they all look the same (they do not look the same), but because they are made for cutting. Any system that can recognize knives as similar must be able to attribute action purposes to actors.
In such situations many things do not have to occur naturally to an artificial intelligence. (For example that Rottweilers cannot mate with Pinschers or maybe they can).
>Perception, >Artificial Intelligence, >Classification, >Individuation.
