Brocker I 290 Foreign Policy/Morgenthau: Thesis: As long as foreign policy rests on the wrong foundations, it can only be wise and balanced by chance. Morgenthau sees a great evil in America's spirit of the Crusade - in its culturally consolidated inclination Brocker I 291 to neglect a sober calculation of power and interests because of the fixation on abstract principles (freedom, democracy, human rights). Against this evil the author prescribes absolute objectivity; the liberation of foreign policy from moralizing; its orientation towards interests; the willingness to compromise even with supposed evil (even the Soviets have interests); in view of compromises, finally, the will to empathy in the sense of a permanent effort to best understand the other side not only with its vital interests but also with its historical experiences.
