| Realism, philosophy: realism is a collective term for theories which, in principle, believe that it is possible for us to acquire knowledge about objects of the external world that is independent from us as perceptual subjects. A strong realism typically represents the thesis that it would make sense to even create hypotheses about basically unknowable objects. Brocker I 291 Realism/Politics/Foreign Policy/International Relations/Morgenthau: In his 1948 paper (1) Morgenthau wanted to grasp reality in basic terms: his theory is based on a small number of central elements that always shape the social arena: Power, equilibria and counterbalances of power, its ideological disguise, rules, normative institutions. >Equilibrium, >Power, >Institutions, >Ideology. In the long term, says Morgenthau, human behavior will still be shaped by impulses and patterns that have developed and consolidated over a hundred thousand years. In his own time, Morgenthau was no longer able to recognize genuinely new forms.
