Alfred Schütz on Observation - Dictionary of Arguments

Habermas III 178
Observation/Sociology/Schütz/Habermas: Problem: the language games that the social scientist finds in his field of objects are of particular nature, how can a theory of this particularity be solved?
>Language games
.
Schütz: Thesis: The social science observer adopts a theoretical attitude that allows him/her to rise above the lifeworld perspective of both his own as well as the investigated everyday practice.
>Observation, >Theory, >Method.
While we, as members of a lifeworld, are engaged in a "we-relationship" in order to behave as ego to age or alius, the observer breaks with his natural attitude and goes to an extramundane place.(1)
Habermas: the theoretical attitude is characterized as that of the "uninterested" observer.
>Ideal Observer.
Like Husserl, Schütz cannot rely on a methodological approach such as that of the era, but on
Habermas III 179
a decision by the scientist to replace the value system of science with the value system of his everyday practice.
HabermasVsSchütz: however, he would have to show how to connect the theory formation to the knowledge that the scientist finds in the field of objects, without binding the validity of his statements to the context of lifeworld at the same time.
>Theories.
