Louis Dollo on Similarity - Dictionary of Arguments

Gould I 41
Similarity/Evolution/Probability/Louis Dollo (d. 1931): established the often misunderstood "Dollo's Law". (1) As a result, he was counted among Darwin's adversaries. In fact, he was a follower of Darwin, who was very interested in parallel developments based on different starting points. He said: Probability theory ensures that there is practically never a parallel formation that leads to a factual complete similarity. The past cannot be erased.
For example, Gould: Ichthyosaurs have their tails at the exact spot where certain fish have their dorsal fins, but they are reptiles.
