Immanuel Kant on Education - Dictionary of Arguments

Gadamer I 16
Education/"Bildung"/Kant/Gadamer: Education [in the classical period] is closely related to the concept of culture and describes first of all the peculiarly human way of developing one's natural abilities and capabilities. Between Kant and Hegel this Herder-induced coinage of our concept is completed. >Education/Herder
.
Kant: does not use the word in such a context yet. He speaks of the "culture" of property (or "natural disposition"), which as such is an act of freedom of the acting subject. Thus, among the duties towards himself, he mentions that of not letting his talents rust without using the word "education"(1).
Education/Hegel: Hegel, on the other hand, already speaks of self-education and education when he takes up the same Kantian idea of duties against oneself(2). >Education/Humboldt.
