Hans-Georg Gadamer on Kant - Dictionary of Arguments

I 224
Kant/Gadamer: Kant had brought the efforts to a close to solve the problem of knowledge that had been posed by the appearance of the new science of the 17th century. The mathematical-scientific construction, which the new science used, found with him the justification of its epistemological value, which it needed because its concepts brought with them no other claim to existence than that of entia rationis. The old picture theory was obviously no longer sufficient to legitimize it(1). Thus, due to the incommensurability of thinking and being, the problem of cognition has been posed in a new way.

1. The ancient preform of the epistemological problem, which we find, for example, in Democritus and which was also read into Plato by Neo-Kantian historiography, stood on a different ground. The discussion of the problem of recognition, which could have been led from Democritus, ended in truth in ancient skepticism (see Paul Natorp, Studien zum Erkenntnisproblem im Altertum 118921 and my study in the "Begriffswelt der Vorsokratiker" 1968, pp. 512-533) (now Vol. 5. der Ges. Werke, pp. 263-282).
