Hans-Georg Gadamer on Sensemaking - Dictionary of Arguments

I 159
Sensemaking/Picture/Art/Gadamer: Artificial signs as well as symbols do not receive their functional sense from their own content like the picture, but must be seen as signs or symbols.
>Signs
, >Symbols, >Sense.
I 160
By foundation we understand the origin of the sign or symbolic function. The so-called natural signs, e.g. all signs and portents of a natural event, are also endowed in this fundamental sense, i.e. known as signs. They are only exhibiting sign function if they are experienced as signs. However, they are only experienced as signs because of a prior combination of sign and signified. The same applies to all artificial signs. Here the taking of signs is carried out by convention, and language calls the original act by which they are introduced a foundation. Its referring sense is based on the foundation of the sign (...). It is important to see that a work of art does not owe its actual meaning to a foundation, even if it was actually donated as a cult image or as a profane monument.
