Hans-Georg Gadamer on Genius - Dictionary of Arguments

I 99
Genius/Artists/Art/Gadamer: The general consciousness (...) is still determined today by the effects of the genius cult of the 18th century and the sacralization of artistry, which (...) are characteristic of 19th century bourgeois society. It is confirmed in that the concept of genius is basically conceived from the point of the observer. This ancient concept presents itself as convincing not to the creative, but to the judging mind. What appears to the observer as a miracle, of which one cannot understand how one can do such a thing, is reflected out into the wondrous of a creation through ingenious inspiration. The creators may then, as long as they are watching themselves, be able to use the same forms of understanding, and so the cult of genius of the 18th century was certainly nourished by the creators. But in their self-apotheosis they never went as far as bourgeois society would allow them to go.
>Artist/Gadamer
.
The self-conception of the creator remains far more sober. He/She also sees possibilities of doing and being able to and questions of "technique" where the viewer seeks inspiration, mystery and deeper meaning(1).
>Art, >Art works.
