Yochai Benkler on Newspapers - Dictionary of Arguments
Benkler I 40 Newspapers/Benkler: Normally, we think of newspapers as dependent on copyrights. In fact, however, that would be a mistake. No daily newspaper would survive if it depended for its business on waiting until a competitor came out with an edition, then copied the stories, and reproduced them in a competing edition. Daily newspapers earn their revenue from a combination of low-priced newsstand sales or subscriptions together with advertising revenues. Neither of those is copyright dependent once we understand that consumers will not wait half a day until the competitor’s paper comes out to save a nickel or a quarter on the price of the newspaper. If all copyright on newspapers were abolished, the revenues of newspapers would be little affected. >Copyright/Benkler, >Digital Networks._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
