Use, philosophy: words are used to mention something. The distinction use/mention is important in the philosophy of language because words or phrases in turn may be mentioned, as in a quote or a correction. Within logical formulas parts are used, others are mentioned. See also mentioning, use theory, meaning, meaning theory, language, quote/disquotation, quotation marks, quasi-quotation, object language, metalanguage.

E. Tugendhat on Use - Dictionary of Arguments

I 209
Language use: So far the speech of the use is still quite indeterminate. Question: With reference to what is the use of linguistic expressions regulated, if they are no longer objects? Nearest answer: circumstances.
>Circumstances
, >Words.
I 225
Use/Tugendhat: >"stand for": one must find an expression which stands for an object. - So you explain the rules of use of the singular term.
>Singular terms.
Problem: the rules of use for the singular term presuppose the predicates and vice versa.
>Rules, >Predicates.
I 226
Usage Rule/Tugendhat: If the circumstances are completely unsuitable for explanation, must we not also abandon the rule of use? This is a mistake: usage is about function, not about circumstances!
>Use theory.
I 279
Usage: the usage theory of meaning always refers to propositions (propositions or states of affairs), not to material objects.
((s) Most authors Vs: the theory of use refers to words, not to propositions.
Wittgenstein, Philosophical Investigations, § 43. "One can, for a large class of cases of the use of the word "meaning" - though not for all cases of its use - explain this word thus: "The meaning of a word is its use in language."").
>Meaning, >Sentence meaning, >Word meaning.
