Empiricism: a branch within epistemology which assumes that sensory perception is fundamental for setting up claims and theories. The opposite position, rationalism, assumes that even purely logical knowledge and conclusions from this knowledge may be sufficient for the building of theories. See also logical positivism, instrumentalism, rationalism, epistemology, theories, foundation, experiments, > inferentialism, knowledge, experience, science.

Jürgen Habermas on Empiricism - Dictionary of Arguments

III 17
Empiricism/Habermas: The theories of modern empirical science represent a normative and at the same time universalistic claim that is no longer covered by fundamentalist assumptions of an ontological or transcendental philosophical nature. Their claim can only be examined on the basis of the evidence of counter-examples and can thus be supported in the end, then the reconstructive theory proves to be able to prepare internal aspects of the history of science and (...) to systematically explain the actual, narratively documented history of science in the context of social developments.
