Benjamin Barber on Republicanism - Dictionary of Arguments

Brocker I 685
Republicanism/BarberVsRepublicanism/Barber: In a self-governing community of citizens united less by uniform interests than by civic education, people have acquired the ability to pursue common purposes through civic attitudes rather than trough altruism or good nature. (1)
This sets Barber apart from ancient democracy as well as classical republicanism. Ultimately, Barber even accuses liberal democracy of favouring a type of person who is more exposed to totalitarian temptations.(2)
