Carl Schmitt on Ideas - Dictionary of Arguments
Brocker I 173 Ideas/Schmitt: In his parliamentary publication (1) Schmitt outlines some forms and stages of democratic legitimacy and argues as the hermenut of collective belief in political ideas and institutions. >Legitimacy, >Democracy, >Hermeneutics. Ideas create their institutions, he says, but they also change. Schmitt does not claim that an "absolute rationalism" developed with logical necessity from a "relative rationalism" and then somehow changed into an irrationalism of direct use of force. >Rationalism. He shows that high expectations of the parliamentary enterprise were disappointed and new movements emerged, which in demarcation still remained negatively connected to the principles and forms, ideas and institutions from which they differed. He developed a type of hermeneutic historiography of movement, which characterized the political movement from the collective "ideas" and "evidence" in legal or idealistic terms. >Historiography. 1.
